Looking at an old building in a new way
Welcome! This website is an introduction to the geospatial history of London, Ontario's South Street Hospital.
After almost 140 years of service, the South Street Hospital is being demolished and the land used for a neighbourhood revitalization project. As cities continue to evolve and change, it is helpful to occasionally pause and look back, especially when such historically significant buildings are involved. How did the South Street Hospital develop? Why did it change in the ways that it did? How did this hospital advance medicine in London? Through this website you can explore these questions and more using an interactive historical geographic information system (HGIS).
To start, click on "The Project." After a short introduction to the hospital's history and the layout of the HGIS, you can follow the story from 1875 to 2013. All historical information for the hospital can be found right on the maps.
If you have any questions, check out the "More Information" section. You can also contact me if your question isn't answered there. If you're interested in creating this kind of project yourself, take a look at the "How can I do this?" page.
Happy exploring!
